Church of the Holy Ghost

316 Judson St, Tiverton, RI

The Church of the Holy Ghost is located on Hooper Street in North Tiverton, adjacent to the Holy Ghost Religious Education and Youth Center.

In the early 1900s, as people continued to flock to Rhode Island and Tiverton from southeast Massachusetts, the Holy Ghost Parish comprised Tiverton, Little Compton and Portsmouth. Portsmouth was the main headquarters for the parish at St. Anthony's.

In 1913, Bishop Matthew Harkins made Rev. Christopher Rooney the pastor of a small mission church in North Tiverton called the Church of the Holy Paraclete. In 1920, it was changed to the Church of the Holy Ghost.

In 1923, the mission was raised to the status of parish, with Fr. Joseph Boehr as pastor, and a year later a rectory was constructed. Through much growth and change over the mid-twentieth century as North Tiverton converted from a farming community to one that housed the families of those working in the local mills, the Holy Ghost Parish was comprised of 1,150 families and 4,140 parishioners by 1976.

Today, the church boasts to be the largest parish in the area with over 2,000 families. It is overseen today by Fr. Jay A. Finelli.

The church also provides Catholic Social Services, which includes adoption, bilingual health and wellness, a food pantry, child protection and counseling services. It operates within the physicial boundaries of the Diocese of Fall River.
