No Tolls

I have heard from some that these tolls are a done deal, I don't believe we should just lay down and except this, to those of you that say it can't be done, Then look at what Fall River did with the LNG deal, they stopped a major corperation and the US goverment Buddy Cianci will be broad casting live at Clements market next week, come, bring signs, stand up and be counted Stop the TOLLS

Mike Burk, Chairman of the TDTChas stated he would like to see the tolls put between Fish road and Stafford road, That's not the answer at all, $ people that live on my street alone will be paying $2.00 a day to go to work AT CHARLTON hospital, students from ri who can't afford a transponder are going to pay $4.00 dollars each way to attend classes, I don't think to just roll over and die on this is the answer. the tolls should be stopped completely period, Raiseing the tolls on the Newport Brdge would capture more tourist dollars while tolls in Tiverton will just kill those dollars. I for one am sad to see Anyone of a political nature, not fight this Period

So then I'd have to pay just to be able to go to FR to go grocery shopping. It's just getting more ridiculous by the minute.

No JimL, In the NDN the letter said that is just one options that the State Reps are looking at, among others - such as reducing the tolls as low as possible. The letter also advised writing the governor about the bad idea. I think everything we can do, no matter what, should be looked into.

yes it is Renee, tolls are not the answer, if tolls must be increased then let them raise them on the Newport Bridge, Nobody Has to use the Newport bridge if they so desire, but if you must then let the state previde a program for Ri resident to buy a transponder at a low cost and use a print out at tax time to claim the fees as a taxi deduction. Instead all of Newport county got hit With paying the tolls, automatic price increases, basicly loss of wages sine it will cost you at least $2.00 to go to work

"if tolls must be increased then let them raise them on the Newport Bridge, Nobody Has to use the Newport bridge if they so desire,"

How is that any different than moving the tolls between Fish and Stafford? People can get around that and choose not to use it either if they so desire. And it is a heck of a lot easier to go between Stafford and Fish on back roads than it is for someone in South Country to go thru Providence to get to one of the other bridges.

Mike Burk, the answer to this is NO TOLLS this town is trying to build it's tax base and do you think increassing the cost to anyone building in the Industrail park will help this town along? The price of everything trucked into Newport count will raise, The Many folks who work in the Hospitals and medical offices , resturants etc will see loss wages from this The Only fair and proper answer is no Tolls at all Why would you not still be trying to fight this? iT'S JUST A GRAB FOR TOURIST DOLLARS, BUT ALL IT WILL DO IS COST TOURIST DOLLARS AND PLACE HARDSHIP ON (OPPS SORRY) many newport county residents. Sorry but i don't think for the TDTC to just let this pass is a good idea. Mitigate you say, that is not the answer? stop it cold is the answer, we must do it Legaly moraly what ever it takes I hope you will change your stand on this and not settle, for any toll

K Silvia, i am holding the letter to the Newport daily News in my hand, It speaks of putting the toll between Fish and Stafford Road What does thar help? Next it says Keep the tolls as low as possible it also statesputting the tolls there will allow folks from Tiverton to cross the new Bridge free, What if you (like many in town) work in Fall river? so to me that a no go, Mr Burk says we should all Mitigate this. That still leaves us tagged n bagged, NO TOLLS is the answer, Will you and the rest of Newport county just settle for being turned ibto a tourist in your home state?

JimL,

I am looking at it too. Just read it. I think looking at all avenues for this is the way to go. I have been following the toll discussion on here and on other boards and there seems to be a very real chance that the tolls are coming as the GA is not likely to reverse its decision. I hope not, but if that is a distinct possibility then looking at other avenues, in addition to the petitions etc., is a good idea. You seems to be attacking it just because it is coming from the Dems. That kind of partisan stuff is not what we need right now.

You really thing to dump everyone crossing that bridge into Fish road is the answer? Really?what i see in that letter is options, What i feel is NO TOLLS is the answer, You are right tho this is not a political party issue, the thousand on names collected on the STOP THE TOLLS PETITION has no party attached to it, and i am not the one that put the TDTC into this, Mr Burk did I would hope he would have said sign the petition instead

I am not saying which answer I favor. I am saying I think we have to look at ALL Alternatives. You say just stop them... OK if we can great. But what if we can't? And wouldn't our state reps be in the best position to know if that is even possible? I am saying be prepared for any possibility is smart - including that the tolls will not be stopped.

Jim L

Did you perhaps read the article about the tolls yesterday K Silvia, it said that BEFORE the tolls are put in place ALL the implacations and effects of it must be studied, what i see is the plans for tolls moving right along and smoke n mirrors on the other end, Your right this is not a partision issue , I did not make it such, I just stated that i am disappointed in Mr Burk's stand on this issue, I and many others are trying very, very, hard to stop this completely, it is the only answer. and i think if the stidies get done that will happen Because I don't like the wording of Mr Burk's statement does not make me think every Democrat in Tiverton Agree to mitigate

I think you are reading into the letter and my comments something that is not there. Just because someone thinks we should explore all alternatives doesn't mean we don't or didn't want them stopped.

I did read the article, which is why I adamantly support looking at all our options It is here:

http://news.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/2012/08/tolls-on-ris-sa.html

It is a bit naive I think to say "let's just stop the tolls," as this has already passed and is now law. If we can stop them, awesome. But if not, we need to be prepared otherwise we will be blindsided.

Thank you tom, while we remain the best of enemies on other issue this very much a Town wide and countywide issue. I have not spoken to ! business owner who favors this, plenty off college students both in state and out of state, What will the effect be onThe four corners at gray's ice cream, you go there on a saturday or sunday and it's 95% from out of state, while it will hurt tourist dollars in Newport and places like four corners, just how would you approach someone to buy and build in the indy park" yes we have a great site for you, but your trucks will pay a toll and so will your workers if they live 1/2 mile away in mass. I see terrible economic fall out from this for the entire county, not the tolls but the price increases all of us will get hit with

Let's not forget that this State has one of the highest gas taxes in the country. The Federal Gas tax was created to get tolls off the high ways. It was considered a fair way to fund road construction and maintenance with the local gas tax included. The problem is our legislature has taken that tax and used it in other areas of the budget. They're funding free and reduced bus rides across the state. They fund social welfare programs to the tune of 3.4 billion . The real problem is the legislature doesn't no how to prioritize spending. You can't give free bus rides while the bridges are falling down. The mismanagement continues this year with an even bigger budget .8 billion dollars in a state with less then one million people. Till we fix the DOT, which has been sued several times, costing the State three quarter of a billion because of mismanagement on projects. Fix the social welfare budget. We will continue to have problems. Our legislature only knows how to raise taxes .We need to teach them how to cut them. Fund and fix DOT, Take the MT Hope bridge and place it under DOT authority That will solve the RITBA problem of funding. Tell Governor Gump go to hell!

I think they should pay us $4.00 every time we drive over the bridge, and see how they like a little of their own medicine for a change.

d silvia , you say i am misinforming the public and Rep Edwards has other plans? well roll them out a nd see how much support they get i am all for a different plan, whats this? a secret plan/ shall we just sit here and wait for the magic bullet? let us all know about the plan, are we not voters? the only thimg i have seen on here is a quote that says the tdtc and Mr edwards plan to MITAGATE the tolls, Mitagate= to make less harsh so show me and the rest of Tiverton and portsmouth and Newport county how i have made an error bring it forth, why hide it? this is not a political game of i said this to get elected this is not a the TCC is so evil they need to see daylite issue, this is everyone in Newport county getting bagged and i have no desire to tap dance around the issue with anyone PERIOD!!

There is no more important issue on patch than the new tolls to tap dance around them with news of bake sales and carwashes , softball games just serves to ignore an issue of vital importance of Newport county voters not to slight Patches coverage of local things, but as a parent of 2 sons who played allstar basketball and baseball and went to torneyments all over the state and mass this toll will just stifle that playing of outstanding games< nevermind the fact that PonagaNSETT always has a good kids team! hello folks upstate you and i know it's all parents driving your kids around and you also know if your kids win you come back, so i hope you like paying $16.00 dollars a day to see tour kid play in Tiverton

Jim.

I don't believe that people will drive 10-15 min out of their way and spend the extra money on gas to avoid a .83 toll. Some paying the $2 will but it won't be the majority. Remember, we live in a society that can't walk across the living room to change the channel. In other states, there are alternate ways around the tolls and it just hasn't happened that local roads have been inundated - Florida for example. Still in favor of doing everything we can agaisnt the tolls

You could just cut down the back roads Renee, , I would think alot of Folks from Portsmouth and Middletown would know how, and others will learn, the easest for me is Main Rd down to the K Of C onto Fish rd by Cook pond and homefree, As i was in traffic at the Bugarmarsh Rd end of Fish rd, stooped in traffic by the quarry i was just thinging about how much worse it is now, I'm sorry i just consider this whole deal on big insane money stealing rip off, The Ri Bridge bozos need about 12 million right now for bridge car, , the take on these new tolls should be about 24 million a year , gee wheres all that extra money gonna go, I like the idea of raise EVERYONE in RI car regestration $2.00 bucks a year, can the bridge boys, they just cut the lawn, all the repair work the pass out, i'm not even sure they get bids on it then let the DOT handle the Bridge and cutting the lawn, seems way fairer to me
