Blog: Five Surefire Ways to NOT Help Our Community Thrive

Communities are living, breathing entities. Thinking, feeling things guided by a collective conscience and general moral compass. A whole that in many ways is the sum of its parts.

The laws of nature also apply to communities: There is life, there is passing; there is the constant of change that weaves its way through all the moments in-between; there is internal and external growth and evolution sparked by day-to-day experiences.

Amidst the challenges and struggles, successes and accomplishments, communities thrive on. How might you ask? Remember those "parts" from a few paragraphs before? Those are you and me; our families and our neighbors. Everyone coming together not only for the benefit of each other but the collective whole. Community living is all about the give and take; a real live stone soup of sorts, where everyone has something to contribute to make it the best it can be.

But alas, we continue to live in polarized times fraught with pointing fingers, blaring bullhorns, and internet anonymity that makes it okay to belittle and degrade your neighbors; economic, social and environmental tensions that unfortunately only seem to drive the wedge deeper instead of inspiring innovation, collaboration and good old fashion ingenuity.

I haven’t spent much time on The Patch, but from what I’ve observed and partaken in terms of “dialogue” has been far from uplifting. Given that, I’ve taken the liberty of capturing a list of five surefire ways to take the “unity” out of community, snuff out resiliency and not help it thrive:

  1. Scream From the Sidelines. Communities are participatory in nature. Playing armchair or Monday Morning quarterback won’t change anything. If you don’t like how things are, get involved and apply your thoughts, time and talents directly.
  2. Beat Down Ideas. Similar to #1, if you’re not adding ideas to the mix, you shouldn’t be so quick to shoot down those of others. Bring your chips to the table if you want play a hand.
  3. Spew from the Ideologue’s Pulpit. Whether you drift far to the left or right, communities balance best when positioned from the center of the political and social fulcrum. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinions and positions, but at some point, if the center can’t be found, you’re only sliding off to one side or the other.
  4. Spend Your Dollars Elsewhere. Not supporting (y)our local economic base only fuels the budget and tax debate (debacle?). It’s been proven over and over again that supporting local businesses allows money to stay in the community and be paid forward. Can’t find what you’re looking for here? Maybe that’s your cue to pursue a business opportunity yourself.
  5. Think It’s an Eternal “Us” Versus “Them” Struggle. This is so old. It doesn’t work in Washington. It doesn’t work in Providence. It sure as heck doesn’t work at the local level either. We have to find the courage to get away from playing this card, find common ground and fix the problems that we believe are before us.

When are we going to get past all of this, roll up our sleeves and get down to work? Our communities, so fortunate to be nestled in this neck of the woods continue to set the stage for great things – smart, sensible and resilient things that pave the way for communal prosperity at every turn.

We teach our kids to share and play nice in the sandbox; to practice compassion and kindness; to use words to build up, not hurt others; that they can do anything they set their minds to. Why is it that all that flies out the window when you become a taxpayer?

We all can do better.

You are living in a fantasy world Bill Gerlach, not Tiverton.

David Nelson

11:50 am on Wednesday, January 4, 2012

Bill -I like your remarks , especially this portion that I pasted below.
"We teach our kids to share and play nice in the sandbox; to practice compassion and kindness; to use words to build up, not hurt others; that they can do anything they set their minds to. Why is it that all that flies out the window when you become a taxpayer? We all can do better".

None of us is perfect, we can all make mistakes. How we respond to our mistakes and adversity defines who we are.

Mr. Nelson, the five points that are listed by the author describe you! As a public official your behavior at various public meetings has been appalling. You should strongly consider following the advice that is provided in this letter.

People who know the history of Tiverton's past understand why there is a divide . The dirty politics and manipulation of the system have left people bitter and discontent . People were lied to, and cheated. Once you are taken advantage of, you never trust people completely again. The town is growing slowly as new people move in. They bring new ideas and attitudes . Over time they learn why people are upset with our Government and resistant to new ideas. The voting booth is the only place we get resolve.

PS, People trust the Friends of the Library as I learned in the special election. I just hope the State legislature keeps the promise . When there is a need people respond positive

Can we build consensus on this statement
State GOP executive director Patrick Sweeney said the state needs to cut down on wasteful spending so it can continue to improve schools and offer more choices for students and parents.

“If we focused on waste, we could provide more resources to our children in the classroom,” Sweeney said. “And speaking of the next generation, Mayoral Academies and Charter Schools should be allowed throughout the state so that parents can use the education they want for their children.”

There will never be harmony in politics or budgeting . While every one has common interests we each have our own special interests. Regardless of what they are, they drive our arguments. The real problem with middle ground is when you try to please every one you end up deficit spending, $16.5 trillion dollar national debt . Locally we have a $47 million dollar unfunded liability because we gave pay raises and didn't fund them to keep taxes down. We try to please every one and the bills get run up .

Perhaps he is speaking of people like you "Jimmy."

"We teach our kids to share and play nice in the sandbox" - that is so comical. Not in Tiverton. And it starts with the "adults" in Tiverton. Those who cannot, and will not, follow the law.

Janet Sroczynski

12:08 pm on Wednesday, January 4, 2012

Learn to spell correctly "Jimmy." Your typos are everywhere.

Don't open a Christmas Tree stand in Tiverton, I did. Seasonal too. I even called the Tiverton Building Inspector Bill Eckels, I was told I did not need a permit. We proceeded with a lovely, seasonal Christmas Tree stand on Main Road. Even the Sakonnet Times came down and took photo(s). Only to then be "Threatened" just days later with a Cease and Desist Order. And this, was after I had already spoken to Bill Eckels, and was granted verbal permission to do so. He said I did not need a permit, and certainly he said...."you don't need any permits at all, and nothing at all in writing."

The list goes on and on, in Tiverton. And it sends a clear message to those who wish to do business in Tiverton, Rhode Island. Lawsuits of: 1) The Morans 2) The Tiverton Yacht Club -the Morans again in on that lawsuit 3) Tiger & Missy Pelletier Lawsuit and 4) The O'Dell Lawsuit.

Did anyone on here read the MESSAGE by mr Gerlach? Doesn't appear that except for Joe you didn't, this man had some good idea's for the old ranger school, i didn't agree with the use of town money for it, but he didn't just disappear, he is still here trying to help his and our town and you bozo's use his blog to attack other persons on here. It is becomeing increasingly obvious that a few of you are just on a personal vendetta and care nothing at all about the health of this town, i for one am glad some of you are becomeing whiney clowns

Jim L, why can't Joe answer any questions that are asked of him?

Janet Sroczynski

3:20 pm on Wednesday, January 4, 2012

Call yourself your own bozo "Jim L." Some of us business owners, including myself......gave up on trying to deal with Tiverton politics ages ago......at a time when "Software Tax Credits" were being handed out to software companies that located in Tiverton, RI. I was that CEO/President, and if I were you/others.....I would read my comments above on how I was treated. You sent a message to the business community alright. And this is by the so-called "family and friends" of Tiverton, Rhode Island-Sroczynski/Caron/Moran-side of the family/friends. Get real! And the former moderator is James Donnelly, Jr., of Martine Street, Fall River, Mass. and Tiverton, RI.....and his wife Barbara sits on the library group!

It's some of you, who act like the bozo clowns! To use your own words.

I have my own choice of words for it. Tell me, do you think that Tiverton and the people whose names I have mentioned, strike people from outside Tiverton....say Boston, New York and Washington, as being a bit "odd"........or poorly educated, is the term that is most often applied. Then toss in the criminal behavior, far too lengthy to list here...but start with an illegal swimming pool, that was "icing on the cake."

Short-comings can be overlooked, but this has gone far beyond that.

Jimmy

4:20 pm on Wednesday, January 4, 2012

So now people from Tiverton are " a bit odd and poorly educated"? Your obviously just a close minded idiot.

Janet Sroczynski

4:32 pm on Wednesday, January 4, 2012

Jimmy, by your own admission...you are a 29-year old from Tiverton. I can outpace you 10 to 1.

Let me know how many businesses have located to Tiverton. And in the industrial park? Zero. Nada. Nothing. Taxes have more than doubled, or haven't you been paying attention.

Read the thread that has Jeff Caron sitting in a tee pee, several years ago. At least he has Brown University on his resume. But the behavior, is strikingly "odd." Typical, however.....for Jeff Caron. Does he still play his imaginary violin at town meetings? Yes, he does.....and several writers/bloggers on the Tiverton Patch have commented.

Perhaps it is you Jimmy, who is the close-minded idiot. Your choice of words, not mine. I have read your other post(s), and your vocab.-needs work. I see you have taken it upon yourself to insult other Tiverton/Patch writers as well. It's when people find out your real name, and not the "Jimmy" that you go by here on Patch.....that you will be held accountable. In the real world, where it counts.

Janet Sroczynski

4:50 pm on Wednesday, January 4, 2012

The next time "Jimmy" you feel tempted to write back to me, don't. Instead, take the time to write to the author above......this Bill Gerlach. And the two of you, go for a walk through the woods in Tiverton. Go to the Tiverton Industrial Park. And when you are walking in the woods at the Tiverton Industrial Park, then you can think of me. But don't write to me. I'm not interested. Instead, here's a few things you can ponder on your walk inside the Tiverton Industrial Park: Why is it, that I don't see the following here in Tiverton: Harvard University, MIT-the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern University, Tufts University, Wheaton College, WPI-Worcester PolyTech Institute, Stonehill College, SMU/UMASS-Dartmouth/Boston, etc.; Holy Cross, Clark University, etc.

Do you get the point yet? I proposed a small private college in Tiverton, as well. I see nothing in the Tiverton Industrial Park, either. But enjoy your walk.....if you ever decide to take it, with author of the article.....Bill Gerlach.

Wow how did this positive article turn a blog into about all the lawsuits and the dirty corrupt little town of Tiverton RI. Tiverton from what I can see is a mess that is beyond fixing. The town has lost lawsuit after lawsuit and the town's behavior has not changed. No one was fired and the beat goes on with the town's lawyers laughing all the way to the bank. Why is everything in Tiverton so corrupt and dirty? Why is everything handled in the backroom? Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. Why are our legal bills so much higher than our surrounding communities? Same region, same type of issues. Why? Our town council under the so called leadership of Mr. Lambert is a sad joke. Mr. Lambert keeps everything in executive session and has a nice fake meeting for the pubic and the TV. I am sick and tired of all of the expensive lawsuits that the town has. Time for major changes all new department heads and a new legal team. These councilors will continue to kick the can down the road so they can either retire or get reelected. How sad.

Joe I am much more tuned in to what is actually going on. The public meeting is just a show for people like you to feel good. Why all the court action Joe? Where there is smoke there is fire. To answer your point(s) "Rug Doctor"...this writer/blogger "Jimmy" has run around earlier today and Deleted a good many of his original post(s). And for some reason, the Patch editors allowed him to do it. So the "comment" section does not "flow" naturally, the way that it should, because of this. It was "Jimmy" who started off with his insults/accusations about lawsuits. And yes, Jeff Caron has that paperwork....because I sent it to him. And yes, I agree with your comments....for the most part, Tiverton is a mess.....or as you put it, "the dirty corrupt little town of Tiverton RI."

I called the Tiverton/Patch editor earlier today, after "Jimmy" decided to Delete his comments. And I emailed myself the original thread, prior to his Deletes. And I gave the Tiverton/Patch editor a few suggestions. Silly little games, that the 29-year old "Jimmy" was playing.

Janet Sroczynski

5:42 pm on Wednesday, January 4, 2012

Thanks for your thoughts Joe Sousa, but with me it's not about getting even. I am happy to provide the information above. Enjoy it. People who wanted to plan for a better Tiverton's future, asked me for thoughts/suggestions before I left. It is interesting all these years later, to see that nothing has changed, the lawsuits and bickering continue, taxes went up, and some writers....even those above - this "JC" -show the continued immaturity that has stigmatized some people in Tiverton.

Janet, can you please elaborate on some points mentioned in your 3:20p.m. comment. You alluded to the town shutting down a impromptu holiday tree farm that you started, citing that town's close-minded business practice/ zoning was to blame. Then you insinuate that the town should have stepped in and shut down the construction of "an illegal swimming pool?" In what category of criminal law does a swimming pool fall into? Misdemeanor? Felony? My mom has a pool, should I call the cops?

Tiverton Dad

8:10 pm on Wednesday, January 4, 2012

Bill, I enjoyed your post, and you have accurately identified a few of the behaviors that have led to the polarization in this town. I especially agree with your emphasis on individual responsibility as a means to some form of unity. I disagree that polarized opinions are the problem, however. This country was built on dissent, speaking one's mind--often anonymously--and picking a fight. It's a healthy part of democracy, and it usually leads to a creative consensus that acknowledges the strengths of both positions. We are, at our core, a centrist country. The danger occurs when one radical group or another achieves power. History has shown that the ability of the individual to express themselves as they choose, in voice, in print, and by vote, is the first casualty in the war to keep that power. Manipulation of the truth is the weapon used to steal those rights. I, for one, will continue to "call out"--from the sidelines and from the front lines--those who use that weapon to impose a radical and harmful agenda on this town.

After nearly five years blogging on various sites, I continue to believe in its power as a vehicle for creating an environment for the sharing of ideas, opinions, and the constructive dialogue that can ensue. That said, I'm at a loss with regards to majority of "comments" here. I think they only go to reinforce some of the points I raised in the post.

To those who did provide responses that were on topic, thank you. I should clarify my point about "spewing from the ideologue's pulpit". In no way was I dismissing the need for strong opinions and the expressing of them. People who exhibit passion for an issue can be an amazing catalyst for change. (Heck, I hold strong opinions on a lot of things that move the core of my being.) It's just when those expressing said opinions cannot take the opportunity to critically examine the ideology that is potentially informing it and open one's self to alternative ideas, information or points of interest. They wall themselves up in a way where critical debate is not possible, thus eliminating the possibility for collaboration, compromise, and mutual growth. The reality is that the concept of "majority rules" has unfortunately been cast in such a negative light by partisan politics. Someone needs to be in the majority (even by one) or you'd never get anywhere with our democratic process. What's key -- and has been lost in my opinion -- is the ability to shape what's being voted on in a more balanced and collaborative way.

Why would anyone try to build a consensus around a politically driven piece of pablum such as that? Why don't these "leaders" have the guts to say what they really mean and admit that they want to see the unions go? It's got nothing to do with "choices" or "improving schools" or "waste". How can you trust someone that can't (or doesn't want to) articulate the truth? It's sort of like watching you try to defend TCC's hypocrisy.

P.S. How would one "use the education they want for their children.”?

Many of your questions and comments that have been brought up in the email-thread above, can be answered and/or verified by calling or writing to the attorney general's office in Rhode Island, c/o Christopher Cotta/Tiverton/Providence, RI. He has been mailed a copy of the complaint I filed, and I have discussed many of the points above with him. Jeff Caron also has been mailed a certified copy of the complaint, which he has had an "agent" sign for it. The current Tiverton Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer Gareth Eames has also been mailed a certified copy of the letter, and he signed for that as well. And I visited him in Tiverton at the town hall and another woman who works just outside his office. Thomas Blakey the Tiverton Police Dept. Chief, also has a 2-page complaint that I filed, along with misc. police reports from the digging of the illegal swimming pool. No permits for the illegal swimming pool, no fencing there either and not even a temporary fence-a direct violation of RIGL-Rhode Island General Laws. I hope "Ron Acres" this starts to answer just a few of your points. Associate Justice/Judge Melanie Wilk Thunberg in Newport County Superior Court and Judge Rocha also heard parts of the case, and I have been forwarding updates to her/Judge Melanie Thunberg as well. With the passing of Judge Rocha, I telephoned his daughters lawfirm in Providence, RI. Additional litigation, the attorney general's office(s) are involved.

No Janet, you didn't. What I was concerned with was the hypocrisy in your posts concerning government intervention. In one post you condemn the government for issuing a cease and desist order in your Christmas tree venture, then you call every law enforcement agency in the state over the construction of a "criminal swimming pool." Why the two standards Janet? In your most recent response, you rattle off a frenzy of complaints and certified letters to every law/code enforcement agency in the town and state. While we're on the topic, how are these complaints going Janet? Any status updates? Have you got a response from the AG's office or the Chief of police concerning any of your complaints? Did you think the AG's office would assign their top prosecutor to this swimming pool caper? Or did you expect a tactical team to respond to secure the swimming pool, and then a forensic team to follow and take soil samples like CSI? I venture to guess that you haven't been updated by any agency, because that would lend credence or legitimacy to your frivolous complaints? But don't worry Janet, because I'm going to tell you why. I'm going to tell you what every recipient of these complaints wanted to tell you, but couldn't, because their very position as building inspector, police officer, prosecuting attorney, and Chief of Police prevented them from doing so. You're crazy.

Perhaps it is all of you that are crazy...."Ron Acres" provided that is even your real name, and "Tivertonian" same goes for you too. Why don't you hire good skilled, educated people to do their jobs? Interesting, how the illegal swimming pool was dug with no permits, and a toddler living there at the time....under the age of two. He is my son. And highly doubtful that the insurance investigators, who have already cleared me of any and all wrongdoing, would agree with any of you. Interesting how the Tiverton Building Inspector Gareth Ames came onsite to 2016 Main Road and met with me, and he did not like what he saw dug in the illegal swimming pool......so, he called the Tiverton Electrical Inspector, and he too came onsite and met with me, and he did not like what he saw either. No permits. Interesting, isn't it......how neither 1) The Tiverton Building Inspector Gareth Aemes, who I met with in his office .....or 2) The Tiverton Electrical Inspector, neither of these two individuals had any permits at all, for the digging and construction of an illegal swimming pool. The best part is, I have plenty of photos to prove it. A 10-foot hole in the ground, and close-up photos of the illegal swimming pool contractor(s). I understand Wally DeSouza of Highland Road and his son, are "related" to someone within in the Tiverton Police Department. A fact that has been confirmed, already....when I called and spoke with Betty Jerome, also of Highland Road.

Janet Sroczynski

Interesting isn't it, when this legitimate swimming pool contractor: 1) http://www.poolsbyandrews.com -and their longtime salesman "Rudy Tomassini" -that is his real name, do you notice that those of us who are honest use are real names, and not you fake named phonies on the Tiverton/Patch. And did you know that "Rudy Tomassini" came down and met with me on the property at 2016 Main Road, and he even spoke and in length to my father-in-law. Rudy Tomassini's group, at: 1) http://www.poolsbyandrews.com - 6 Republic Road, North Billerica, MA 01862 and tel 1.800.272.7946 has already been put on "legal notice" in case we need Rudy Tomassini's expert testimony and his "notes" from when he met with me, and my father-in-law, at 2016 Main Road, Tiverton, RI....and in front of over a dozen of my college friends as witnesses, including my husband.

Haha. Add me to the lawsuit as well, because, I, who is listed above, 1) agree with Ron Acres and Tivertonian, and 2)have no clue what Janet is talking about(s). Interesting, is'nt it, that a)this comment thread is the bestest one yet, and b)I have printed them out for the "hilarity" that will surely follow.

Janet, I have been trying to follow your thread regarding the issue of an "illegal" swimming pool in Tiverton. What is Mr. Caron's role in all of this? Also, who owns this illegal pool?

If i remember correctly it was your father in laws swimming pool right Janet? Your father in law that was letting you stay in his house? Your inlaws must be huge fans of you

How anyone follow any of this nonsense. How many lawsuits are you involved in Janet? I count 9 from all of your rants.

You have plenty of reading material. If you are all so interested in this court case, look it up online too. I will put the request in through Associate Justice/Judge Melanie Thunberg, and see if she is agreeable to posting it online. I certainly am. I want these illegal contractor(s) brought into court, I want them publically identified, and I have been filing formal, written complaints with each and every group. They are being sued, and so is Tiverton. Ask Jeff Caron, who is noticeable absent from this email thread....or didn't any of you notice that?......I sure did, ask Jeff Caron why the illegal swimming pool contractor -Wally DeSouza and his son-of Highland Road, would leave 2016 Main Road, our prior house....and "run down to the Carons house on Nannaquaket Road".....an eyewitness is Mr. John H. Moran Sr.-of South Tiverton, is also going to be sent legal notice(s), and that is my sister-in-laws father. He and I have had many chats about all of this.

Like I said, the matter is headed back to court. And it involves multiple Attorney General(s) offices, and what they are going to "Discover" in Litigation. People's email accounts, people's work-email-accounts, government email accounts-Jeff Caron, at NUWC-Naval Underwater Warfare Center/Newport, RI-federal employee/other's complaints of his postings and his "Catek.com" snowboard binding email account, you name it.....the matter is heading to court.

"Ron Acres" -take yourself to Butler....per your own post above. And double check your own facts, Jay Moran's wife -Eilleen Moran worked there! You have an in! Call her, and have yourself admitted! Perhaps she can put you on a discount plan! Ha, ha, ha......I'm laughing all the way to the bank.

Tiverton is being sued.

Christopher Cotta - if you are reading through these email threads, I am looking forward to more chats with you. And thank you for writing that formal letter of complaint against Jeff Caron, and having it posted fairly recently in 1) http://www.eastbayri.com -section. Very helfpul to have read that. It will come in useful in this lawsuit involving Tiverton.

Save all your comments "Breeze McIntosh" - so first of all, we can "Discover" through Litigation, who you really are. And secondly, when you make damaging statements about other people as you tried to above in your post: "One flew over the 2016 Main Road Nest" - make sure you are referring to yourself, and certainly not to me.

This is not the first time that personal injury attorney James A. Donnelly, Jr.'s client.....at 2016 Main Road, Tiverton, RI -had a problem. He was issued a formal Cease and Desist Order back years ago too, for the illegal barn he had John Cabral build (again, no permits there either)....and somone from Tiverton "snitched" and got my father-in-law in trouble for that illegal barn too. Again, no permits. Just call John Cabral (former wife is Jeanine Cabral) of Long Highway, Little Compton and Fall River. After the illegal barn was built, property abutter is Franklin Neville, then it had to be moved. Shame on all of you, wasting my time and the court(s) time, that you are so poorly educated and do not know how to "pull a permit" for: 1) illegal barn 2) illegal swimming pool 3) illegal brook out in back of 2016 Main Road, DEM-will be involved in that illegal brook re-routing. On it goes Tiverton, you are being sued..... 4) Illegal plumbing 5) Illegal electrical work, etc. Dave Sanft-electrical contractor- from Tiverton, Rhode Island....where were your electrical permits for 2016 Main Road, Tiverton.....you never pulled a permit!

Janet, your most recent post clarified the issues even further. However, I am still unclear as to what role Mr. Caron's played in all of this?

Although you have tried to be "funny" Ron Acres, your real name is also going to be discovered through Litigation, so we can all find out who you are, and where you live and work. Sound fair enough, you silly little boys? It sure does to me. I will put the request in with Judge Melanie Wilk Thunberg. And you can all plan on taking a few days off from work, (what rest)....and head to court.

I look forward to meeting all of you anonymous posters here on the Tiverton/Patch. Many of you have already been added to the courts "docket" of people to call, in case we need your testimony. That includes editors of the Tiverton/Patch-they are already on legal notice. But then again, you are such a smart bunch.....I am sure you already knew that.
