Harlem Shake Hits Aquidneck Island

Middletown’s Able Body and Mind and The Salve Regina basketball team do the Harlem Shake.

What is the Harlem Shake?   The Harlem Shake is a worldwide YouTube dance contagion that originated with comedian and video blogger Filthy Frank. On Jan. 30, he uploaded a YouTube of several costumed people dancing to the song "Harlem Shake" by Baauer, and it quickly went viral. See the attached video for Filthy Frank's video.  A group of teenagers known as The Sunny Coast Skate, from Queensland Australia, were the first to imitate the Harlem Shake, which ignited a chain reaction of Harlem Shake uploads to YouTube. Today, a Harlem Shake search on YouTube returns more than 200,000 results.    It’s contagious and nobody appears to be immune. NASA Releases Stunning Image of Washington, DC, Area from Space

NASA is known for supplying some of the most engaging images of planets, asteroids, galaxies, stars and other celestial bodies. Now, the U.S. space agency is enthralling us with images of our own planet. Chris Hatfield, commander of the current International Space Station mission, released a stunning image via Twitter of the Washington area from a height of 230 miles this week.  In the image, you can clearly make out the convergence of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers, as well as some details of the infamous street layout of the city. The image is the latest in a series of Earth-focused images from NASA. Bob Dylan Returning to URI

The legendary musician returns to the Ryan Center after five years for a show in April. Tickets go on sale Friday.

According to his website and Global Spectrum staff, Bob Dylan is returning to Rhode Island to play at the Ryan Center on April 8 with Dawes. Information has also been distributed via the Ryan Center’s Facebook page, and has been circling around on social media as a result. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 1 at 10 a.m. Tickets are $68 for VIP Floor (limited quantity), $48 for the general public, $38 for URI faculty and staff, and $28 for URI students. The faculty, staff and student tickets are limited. According to staff at the Ryan Center, a formal release about the show is scheduled to be sent out on Thursday morning. Newport Jazz Festival Announces Opening Acts

Two acts are scheduled to open the Newport Jazz Festival at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The festival runs from Aug. 2-4.

  The Newport Jazz Festival announced recently that Natalie Cole will be the opening act for this year's festival, along with the Bill Charlap Trio with special guest Freddy Cole. The jazz festival begins on Friday, Aug. 2 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. More than 25 acts are scheduled to perform at Fort Adams State Park on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3-4. Tiverton Community Chorus Donates $1,000 to Tiverton Library Foundation

The Greater Tiverton Community Chorus donated the proceeds from its December 2012 concert series to assist in the last phase of fundraising for the new Tiverton Library.

  After experiencing its most successful concert series ever this past December, the Greater Tiverton Community Chorus donated its $1,000 in proceeds to the Tiverton Library Foundation. All of the net proceeds from The Celtic Christmas Concert performances were donated to assist in raising funds to pay for the construction of the town's new library. Buzz Brownlee, chorus President expressed gratitude for the support Tiverton residents provided to the Greater Tiverton Community Chorus. “In response, as when in 2010 we raised funds to provide the Tiverton Public Schools with a functioning piano, the Chorus voted unanimously to gift the net proceeds of their Tiverton concert to the Tiverton Library Foundation for the new public library,” said…

What time do the Academy Awards begin?

The red carpet will been rolled out at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood for the stars tonight at the 2013 Academy Awards.   Wes Anderson’s highly acclaimed motion picture, Moonrise Kingdom, which was shot entirely in Rhode Island, has been nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Original Screenplay. Over 100 critics, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone and New York Film Critics, have deemed Moonrise Kingdom  "one of the year’s best pictures."   When does the Academy Awards begin? Newport Folk Festival Sells Out Weekend Tickets; Artist Update

Tickets for Friday are still available.

When it comes to the Newport Folk Festival, it pays to plan ahead. Despite expanding to a three-day schedule, it seems folk fans just can’t get enough. Five months before the event, all tickets except for Friday passes have sold out. Yes, that means that all early bird, three-day, two-day, and Saturday passes have been snatched up. To purchase a $49 Friday ticket, click here. This is the fastest that weekend tickets have sold out to date. Last year, weekend tickets sold out in April. In 2011, the festival sold out in advance for the first time ever just weeks ahead of time. The much-hyped festival managed wildfire ticket sales despite even releasing a full line up. "RIFF Goes To The Oscars" Short Film Screening At Sandywoods

Tonight at 7 p.m. at Sandywoods Center for the Arts, check out seven Rhode Island Film Festival short films that have been nominated for the 2013 Best Short Film Oscar.

If you can't make it onto the red carpet at this year's Academy Awards, try settling for the next best thing tonight in Tiverton. Screen seven short films up for Oscar's at tonight's "RIIFF Goes to the Oscars" event at Sandywoods. Sandywoods Center for the Arts, 43 Muse Way, Tiverton, is once again partnering with our friends at the Rhode Island International Film Festival to host a screening of wonderful films.
