Towns Name Emergency Shelters; Woman Offers Pet Shelter

Tiverton and Little Compton town officials are concurring with the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency on final hurricane procedures Friday and Saturday.

As Hurricane Irene nears, town officials in Tiverton and Little Compton named their emergency shelters on Friday. A Tiverton resident has also stepped forward to take in pets who need shelter.

Tiverton Fire Capt. Mark Reimels said the Tiverton Middle School, located at 10 Quintel Drive off Bulgarmarsh Road, will be serving as the town's emergency shelter. It is set to open at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.

Little Compton Emergency Management Director Robert Mushen said the Public Safety Complex, located at 60 Simmons Road, will be serving as the town's shelter, but it does not have any sleeping facilities. The complex can be reached at 401-635-2313.

Neither shelter allows for pets, but a Tiverton resident stepped forward on our Facebook page on Friday to offer her home as a shelter for pets.

Any Tiverton or Little Compton resident can call Shannon Bennett, of Tiverton, at 401-855-1865 about taking care of your pet.
