SOUND OFF: How Should Tiverton Fight The Sakonnet Bridge Toll
Tiverton STOP met with local legislators and residents on Tuesday night to discuss strategies to block tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge.
Tiverton STOP, a citizens group dedicated to barring tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge met with local legislators and residents on Tuesday night.
The state Department on Transportation (DOT) will hold two public hearings next week to learn about potential environmental, traffic and economic threat to the area through the eyes of the community.
DOT Director Michael P. Lewis and Gov. Lincoln Chafee have left questions of toll rates and booth placement undefined, and the governor says he is open to other options for increasing revenue for state infrastructure.
Do you have a plan? How would you balance the public opposition to tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge and the need to increase revenues to maintain roads and bridges. Tell us in the comments below.
Joe Sousa.

Please keep up the Emails to Congressman David Cicilline . We need him involved in this process . We need him to attend and talk against the Toll at the hearing in Washington . His voice needs to be heard at the hearing with the Federal Highway Administration . He said he was apposed to the toll during the campaign . Now we need him to speak out against them.

De-couple the state income tax from Federal income taxes and institute a graduated income tax that meets the financial needs of the state, including the needs of DOT.

Jack, all that will do is feed the DOT more money with no oversight, The Tolls should be stopped, On the new Bridge and if possible on all the Bridges, AND I see no reason for the RITBA not to be disbanded and rolled into the RIDOT, I would think this state could handle puting out bids for bridge painting instead of handing millions of dollars or taxpayer money to a private company with no return for any taxpayers from Newport County

By anyway We can, Mr Edwards should draft a bill calling for more public imput and the Tiverton, EDC should protest, The Town could hold it own meeting with STOP and donttoll, File for an injunction until a complete econmic impact study on the effect on Tiverton , schools and Indy park,, loss of income ,is all documented!Portsmouth should do the same with a comon board joining both efforts. Little Compton should be welcome into the fold, Middletown should be approached also, The amount of businesses owner and workers i have spoken to in that town that fear and oppose this is amazing and I think you will see more outrage that they don't seem to count to the DOT, I think the DOT fears Middletown joining more into this issue. But first we Must stop the DOT from just posting a fake study and baggng every taxpayer in Newport County, We need as many Senators and Reps as we can get to take a public stand all together, how or what ever number of them willing to do this, That would help, Invite our Congressmen to attend a meeting, What ever it takes, If the DOT gets the tolls in they will never go away,. How about the fact that taxpayer money fron the tolls will be going to a private company? Didn't this happen with Studio 38, and we all know how much research and imput was done on that?

Hopefully people will show up in large numbers. Only a dozen or so residents attend the STOP TOLLS meeting that was held Tuesday evening at the Tiverton Town Hall.
