Tiverton Council President Questions 'Misleading' Letter in The Newport Daily News

Tiverton Town Council President Jay Lambert writes a letter to the editor in response to a Nov. 4 letter to the editor in the Newport Daily News written by Chris Cotta, Budget Committee chairman.

To the editor:

I respectfully request The Newport Daily News waive its policies relating to the Nov. 8 special election, specifically, not to publish election-related letters not received by 12 noon, Nov. 3, or publish any such letters after its weekend edition. This request is made necessary by Christopher Cotta's intentionally misleading letter published on Nov. 4. I am not, however, responding to any issues on the merits of the Financial Town Referendum vote. The voter's of Tiverton, I'm sure, have read and heard enough to make their own decision by this time.

Mr Cotta concludes his letter to the editor claiming the he has "requested" the Town Council to advise our voters that the FTR Question does not meet "legal criteria," so Mr. Cotta claims, and that "to date, the Town Council has taken no action." Mr. Cotta would have you believe that he made some timely request to the Town Council that is simply being ignored, or worse. This is nonsense.

Briefly, Mr. Cotta sent a letter dated Oct. 6, to Ms. Suzanne Greschner, chief, Division of Munucipal Finance, with his views concerning the FTR, and a series of questions looking for her support. Not surprisingly, Mr. Cotta asserts that the "proposed process was subjected to the whims and fancy of a few who may have inadvertently missed or ignored taking appropriate measures on behalf of the community." No copy of this letter was sent to the town administrator or the Town Council.

Ms. Greschner concluded her very brief response, dated Oct. 26, urging Mr. Cotta "to discuss any legal issues/concerns you have with the town's solicitor." He has yet to do so. No copy of this letter was sent by Mr. Cotta to the town administrator or the Town Council.

Finally, the notice Mr. Cotta claims the Town Council has not taken action on is his letter dated Oct. 31, which was not received in the Town Clerk's Office until Nov. 3 at 11:26 a.m. Exactly what could the Town Council have done? If The Newport Daily News received Mr. Cotta's letter by 12 noon as required, we had 34 minutes to track down each of the Town Council members and call an emergency meeting. Did you really expect that was going to happen Mr. Cotta? I would ask the editor to advise its readers of exactly the time it received Mr. Cotta's letter to the editor.

There may be valid issues on both sides of the FTR issue, but it does not justify this type of sleazy politics.

The FTM works well for the Over the Cap Gang. They will twist the facts, to maintain this flawed process ,to retain control over the budget. All of the Tax increase over the years went right into labors pocket.
Over the years Tiverton has amassed a huge unfunded pension and benefit liability. A $47 Million dollars unfunded liability . That means we the tax payers have to pay over three and a half million dollars next years to support the broken system.
Tiverton has approximately $37 million in outstanding Bond debt. The Debt service and interest payment for 2011 $3,649,355
Tivertons schools are in need of millions in repairs with the sewer treatment plant and heating system at the High School on their last legs.We will be asked to float a bond to make these repairs soon.
Tivertons Roads and drain systems are in need of about $40 Million Dollars of repair and replacement.
There are dozens of problems on our rec fields and open space areas that need attention.
We hope the land fill will not cost more than PAYT program will cover . This town is in a world of hurt.
The FTR will change this by putting the vote in the people who pay the bills hands.

The only way to stop the pay raises and push for pension reform is to chop them off at the knees. Not until we stop the millions in increases every year will we force the reforms that are needed . Giving a larger pool of voters the ability to decide is a step in the right direction ." The Over TheCap Gang" just keep feeding the problem with more of our money. Fight back, vote yes for the FTR. Take control of our towns finances once and for all.
In the ten years leading up to this year’s FTM, the Tiverton tax levy almost doubled, increasing by 91%. In the seven years, from 2004-2005 to 2010-2011, under the FTM, the Tiverton tax levy increased 60.35% (7% per year). In the 5-year period from 2006-2007 to 2010-2011, the tax levy increased 33.5% overall, a compound rate of 6% per year,

Ask your self these questions. Where did all the increases go? Why is the Town in such Bad condition ? Then ask your self, can I afford to have my $Taxes$ double again over the next decade?

Jay "Hot Dog King" Lambert, the facts that Mr.Cotta address in his letter the editor are irrefutable. Stop your complaining about dates and address the issues that are brought up in Mr. Cotta's letter.

So who are you pimping for. Councilor Brett Pelletier, Mr. Red Shirt, who must be voted out of office next year, and Brian Medeiros and his CURB clowns - or is he the only member of that hatemongering group.

I would agree with Mr Lambert, IF Mr. Cotta's letter was the only time he was hearing the concerns about the FTR. Instead Mr Lambert knew about these concerns all along and decided to dispose of these concerns as being addressed already.

It wasn't even Mr. Cotta's job to vet these issues. It was Mr. Lamberts. One could ask how come he wasn't doing his job and why didn't he pick up on the issues Mr. Cotta raises?

The "Hot Dog King" is still trying to find out which account has the Fall River Tuition's. He is also probably too busy still working with Davey and Robbie on their investigation.

It has always astonished me the facility at which the local demoskunks can lie and mislead in pursuit of their goals. Let's see: make up some lies, bend the facts, submit a misleading letter at the last minute--carefully calculated so that there can be no rebuttal (we saw this in 2010 when the Tiverton Tax Assessor did the same thing regarding the potential tax increase the school committee was proposing). usual tactics: they lie, they mislead, they bend the truth as a matter of strategy: it stinks, and they stink: don't fall for it.
Mr Cotta has a long history of these sorts of things. You only need to go back to the stolen 2008 FTM: as head of the Budget Committee he called an "emergency" meeting of the Budget Committee for 20 min prior to the second FTM in order to synchronize his lies with those of the Town Council, and coordinate the theft of the meeting from the taxpayers: I think we got a ...14 percent? tax raise from that one. He also has repeatedly made contemptuous comments about the taxpayers ("they're always complaining about something"). He's a voting member of the Tiverton governing board.
Bottom line: could the FTR be any worse than an FTM process which has doubled your taxes in nine years and forced them up 23 percent in the past three years alone?
Send mr cotta and the rest of these democrap noisemakers a clear msg that you don't like their lying, cheating tactics, and vote yes for the FTR.
A thoroughly disgusted Fred Floon.

FF, keep promoting the TCC myth that the 2008 was "stolen". You are just angry that the budget you supported did not receive the majority of votes.

Mr Lambert: Please explain why neither the FTR Cmte nor the Town Council even bothered to run the FTR plan by the state? Five members of this Town Council chose to place this FTR amendment on the ballot without ever checking with the state agency charged with overseeing budgets & tax-levies. And when it's discovered that there may be serious legal problems resulting from the FTR, the Council President's reaction is to shoot the messenger? So much for accountability. The fact is that Mr Cotta's correspondence with OMF has been public knowledge for weeks. This Council that has held over a dozen special meetings to address it's pet political projects, & spent months & thousands of taxpayer dollars on a politically-motivated "tax ordinance" that they never even voted on, somehow couldn't bring itself to meet about possible legal problems with a plan they put before voters?

If i didn't do my job, forcing someone else to take it over, the last thing I would do is criticize is the way he did it. Chris Cotta carried Jay Lambert's water, but he just didn't get there fast enough with it? Give me a break. And accusing a concerned citizen of being "sleazy" is no way to demonstrate leadership.

Back Room politics???? There has never been a worse group of back room politicians than the current council. Are you nuts or are just drinking Uncle Dave's Kool Aid?
Why hold back, Nancy? Why don't you tell us all about the weekly meetings at Robby's house or the other fun events you have attended lately that were closed to the public? Talk about lack of transparency- you guys make the NSA look transparent. Come on Ms Dreggs, let us all know about the beg letter to your rich friends over in Nanaquacket. How much money have you and your TCC buddies put into this "election"? When will we find out or better, will we?
When are you going to move out of town after you sell your million dollar home? Are you just waiting to totally screw this town over before you leave?

Jane: You're in rare, delusional, anonymous form today. Really, that's all you've got to say? Why bother? Every reality-deficient rant only hurts your cause, as does every attack on people actually trying to help everyone in town, not just themselves. Whichever TCC diehard yoy are, hiding behind an anonymous screen name, your desperation is embarassing. Debate the issues, or spare us all your conspiracy theories & personal attacks. To keep accusing others of hate-mongering when you post such nasty, deranged things is pathetic. Anyone can check my past posts & yours to decide who's been debating issues, and who's just airing pettiness.

Mr Floon: I'm sure these public servants with more years of service to Tiverton than you can count are all very disappointed to not receive the much-desired "Fred Floon Seal of Approval". Before gracing us with any more of your brand of "insight", think on the words of Mark Twain:"Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt".

Sleeping at town council meetings, stealing meetings so that taxes can be raised and the money given to friends in the local teacher's union, and driving up taxes 27 percent in the past three years does not count as public service, except in the alt.universe of rhode island. No one wants to buy here (taxes too high) and no one can escape tiverton (taxes too high, value of home in the dumper due to 10 years of demoskunk mismanagement). Now, perhaps if we were somehow able to remove the source of the local bloodsuckers' (plural possessive) power, the FTM, we could get back on the right track. HOLD IT!!! That's what we are going to do today! I almost forgot. Worst fears realized, something that looeeze, dandy don and hannibal fought against for years: a free and fair vote on the way forward and the repair of our beloved town...and to quote that brilliant thinker, fred floon, esquire: "you won't be able to steal this one."
