RI Attorney General To Hold Summit On Changes to Sunshine Laws

The 14th annual Open Government Summit takes place on Friday at Roger Williams University and will focus on amendments made to the state's sunshine laws.

The state Office of the Attorney General will host the 14th annual Open Government Summit on Friday to educate and inform public officials and the public about the state’s Open Meetings Act (OMA) and the recently amended Access to Public Records Act (APRA).

With more than 700 public officials, state and municipal employees and Rhode Island citizens registered to attend, this summit is expected to be the most attended since the event's inception.

The summit is being held in the wake of the newly-passed APRA amendments, the first major update to the Act in more than 14 years. The Summit will include a 2011/12 case law and legislative update and examples of frequent trouble areas. The Summit will close with a panel discussion of governments officials and media representatives on open government requirements, obligations and expectations.

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin will join Roger Williams University School of Law Dean David Logan in giving brief welcoming remarks to officially kick off the Summit.
