The much-anticipated debate between Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Barack Obama will air tonight and pundits on both sides of the political aisle have spent the last few days breathlessly pontificating on how the debate can reshape the campaigns.

Some say Romney is seeking to downplay his performance in the debate and its outcome in an attempt to lower expectations of the GOP candidate’s face-off with President Obama. Doing so means that if Romney does better than expected, it increases his chances of being declared the winner.

Romney supporters are hoping the debate will help reshape and reboot his campaign, which has taken numerous hits in recent weeks for missteps.

Others say a win for Obama will solidify the president’s lead in polls in certain key swing states.

Both candidates have spent a lot of time in recent weeks preparing for the debate, which takes place tonight at 9 p.m., Eastern Time, in Denver.
