No Tolls: Newport County Rallies Against Tolls On The Sakonnet River Bridge
More than 100 Newport County residents turned out on Thursday afternoon to fight the General Assembly's efforts to impose tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge.
Rain couldn't put a damper on the sign-weilding spirited residents outside of Clement's Marketplace in Portsmouth on Thursday afternoon.
More than 100 residents from towns across Newport County turned out to in opposition to installing tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge. The state General Assembly approved the tolls along with the state budget in June.
Residents from both sides of the bridge were greeted by enthusiastic beeps by passing motorists as they braved the rain and tornado warnings to gather on the side of East Main Road from 3-6 p.m.
The goal, said the event's organizer Jeanne Smith, was to bring more visibility to plight of Newport County's residents were the tolls to be imposed.

Tom - so what? The rally was posted everywhere. And nothing like calling the Governor names to get him to help us out. So hoping this would be one thing that was not about politics.

Wasn't the rally on Friday? Also, KSilvia - how would you possibly think that this would not be about politics? If it weren't for the moronic governor and other reps that voted for it, we wouldn't be in this position.

Jim L, I agree with you that Paiva-Weed could have stopped the tolls from being placed in the 2012-13 but she didn't. Hopefully, Newport County residents will find a way to get new legislation passed that will remove the tolls from the Sakonnet Bridge.

Traveling over the bridge from Tiverton with a one way only toll seems like a fair compromise to us. As long as the collected funds are used to maintain this very expensive much needed passageway. One of the reasons the original bridge has deteriorated is the from the lack of funds for the upkeep. We have 3 vehicles in our family that travel over the bridge daily and we are willing to pay our fair share to keep this roadway in safe condition. The toll should be the same for everyone resident and non-resident alike so not to hurt local businesses and the transponder helps keep it affordable. Let RITBA do there job much like they do on the Newport and Mt Hope and give them the funds to do so.

In July 2002 then Governer Lincoln Almond gave several different ways to fund the Maintenance of thei bridge toll were only one of them. :
"There are several possibilities to pay for a new bridge. Tolls are merely one option, one that I do not prefer. Indeed, it was my Administration that fought to eliminate the toll on the Mount Hope Bridge. Unfortunately, this General Assembly all but took away the ability to use another option ~ an increase in the gas tax by 1 penny a gallon to pay for the bridge. That increase would have brought in enough annual revenue to pay for the bridge over 35 years. One of the many bad public policy decisions made by the General Assembly in its budget was to increase the gas tax by 2 cents to pay for non transportation programs. Had it not done so, the State could have had a revenue source for a new bridge. Our gas tax may now be too high vis a vis neighboring states to increase it again. Nonetheless, all options must be kept on the table.
It is also possible, though unlikely, that the federal government could provide a special allocation for a new Bridge. State general revenue could also support a bonded project. In fact, taking less than half of the State's annual subsidy to the greyhound owners at Lincoln Greyhound Park would finance this project in full. Some combination of the above or other mechanisms could also be explored. Again, the key is to keep all options on the table until a financing plan is developed."

See, now I guess it got deleted, but the threat from Joe is teh exact reason people do not post their full names on here. Frankly, that threat should be sent directly to the police department.
RI Law below:
RHODE ISLAND
§ 11-52-4.2. Cyberstalking prohibited
(a) Whoever transmits any communication by computer to any person or causes any person to be contacted for the sole purpose of harassing that person or his or her family is guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall be punished by a fine of not more than five hundred dollars ($ 500), by imprisonment for not more than one year, or both. For the purpose of this section, "harasses" means following a knowing and willful course of conduct directed at a specific person which seriously alarms, annoys, or bothers the person, and which serves no legitimate purpose. The course of conduct must be of a kind that would cause a reasonable person to suffer substantial emotional distress, or be in fear of bodily injury. "Course of conduct" means a pattern of conduct composed of a series of acts over a period of time, evidencing a continuity of purpose. Constitutionally protected activity is not included within the meaning of "course of conduct."
(b) A second or subsequent conviction under subsection (a) of this section shall be deemed a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than two (2) years, by a fine of not more than six thousand dollars ($ 6,000), or both.

so, you think it is perfectly ok to use fear and scare tactics against things you do not agree with? Owning your comments is all well and good, but we have seen just how far certain elements within this town and this blog are willing to take things. Hence, the reason most people do not reveal their identities.

I was not on the email list for this thread, so all I saw was the little caption on the home page "Tom, you better hope no one finds out your real name" and that was it.... that is a threat. and since there is a reasonable avenue for someone to actually find out who tom really is, that constitutes a reasonable fear of bodily injury or emotional distress. Posting things like "I better not find out who you are" is a specific and reasonable threat which should be treated as a credible cyberthreat and the police should be notified by the administrator. The offended party should not even have to do anything, although he can on his own as well. the reason eastbayri shut down it's comments is because of multiple credible threats, and then the passage of that law.

In your opinion . The person called Tom is an anonymous poster and he or she has place comments on this site that are libelous. If any one should be charged it should be him. That was my thought when I said he better hope his Identity is never found out. You twisted it in to a threat .

Joe you can't charge someone with libel. Libel is not a crime it is a civil offence your only choice would be to file a law suit and that you could do even if you don't know who he is. If you file suit you can sopena Path for his identity.

Send an email to your congressional leaders and ask them to stop the transfer of the bridge . The bridge transfer requires approval of the Federal High way commission. Send an email today and let them know you want action.

I sent this Email out to our congressional leaders . Send that email now and we have a chance to stop this.
The transfer of the bridges requires Federal approval . We need you to step in to stop this transfer. The Federal Highway Admin. has the application . We need action fast to stop this from happening. This will hurt businesses on and off the island. It's not to late to stop this plan and save our businesses .

With all the problems with the new bridge I have to wonder if it is in any better shape then the bridge it is replacing. There need to be an inspection by an independant engineering firm befor the state takes ownership from Cardi. Right now the thing is being held together with glue and has a noticeble list to the north.
