As they enter its 30th year in business, A-1 Pizza in Little Compton has added a talented baker and event planner to its popular hub on the Commons.
Gerry Dupont, of Edible Creations by Gerry, started baking his creative cupcakes, cookies and assortment of pastries, including cannolis, jelly doughnuts and sticky buns, at A-1 last month. He has been baking cakes to order for the last 20 years and has done event planning for more than 15 years. Dupont, of Tiverton, said he now plans to grow his business at A-1.
He said he made his first wedding cake when he was 13 years old. He has served as the catering director at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Providence College and Salve Regina University. After working in the corporate world in Boston, Dupont came home in 2006 and venture into his own dessert company.
“It’s a marriage made in heaven,” said Tina Mandros Kyros, owner of A-1 in Little Compton. “He’s a great friend and coworker, and he’s really good at what he does.”
Skies the limit for two businesses, as Dupont’s expertise evolves A-1 into not just a pizza and sub shop anymore, Kyros added. A-1 got its start in Fall River in the 1970s and opened a second location in Newport before opening another in 1982 in Little Compton.
Dupont is at the shop early in the mornings, baking by the time they open at 11 a.m. and filling the front case with goodies.
Dupont makes deliveries around the state on Wednesdays. He travels to clients in Tiverton and Fall River, then heads to Blackstone Boulevard in Providence and throughout the city, to Cranston, to North Kingstown and back through Newport.
Dupont said his clientele has primarily been word of mouth, and still is.
“I’ve been getting unbelievable feedback so far,” Dupont added about his first month. “I hope this brings variety.”
With some weddings and events keeping him out late and opening up early, Dupont said he’s in the process of hiring someone to help with the deliveries and run errands for the shop.
