Little Compton NECAP Scores Among Highest in R.I.

Wilbur-McMahon Curriculum Coordinator and Interim Principal Janet Griffith announced increased student performance in math and reading over the last four year by 12 and 10 percent, respectively.

Students and faculty at Wilbur-McMahon School are celebrating this week since learning of their high performance on the 2011 New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP).

In reading, 91.9 percent of 210 tested students tested proficient, up from 84.4 percent proficient of 218 tested in 2010.

In math, 80.95 percent of 210 tested students tested proficient, up from 79.91 percent proficient of 219 tested in 2010.

Curriculum Director and Interim Principal Janet Griffith said students celebrated on Thursday with an ice cream social and the teachers celebrated Friday with a luncheon.

"We are extremely proud of our teachers, students and parents for this great accomplishment," she said, noting that Little Compton tied Barrington and East Greenwich for the highest public school score in meading (92 percent) and came fifth highest in math (81 percent) for public schools. She said over the last four years, their learning community has increased student performance in reading by 12 percent, and increased in math by 10 percent.

Superintendent Kathryn Crowley and School Committee Chairman Don Gomez echoed Griffith's sentiments, hoping to continue building on Little Compton's already "substantial gains" as they develop their curriculum.
