Little Compton Fire Rescues Two From Sinking Catamaran

Little Compton's recently purchased Marine 1 made its first water rescue on Tuesday.

Little Compton's Marine 1 rescue vessel pulled two uninjured men from the waters near South Shore Beach on Tuesday after a catamaran overturned, according to authorities.

Fire Chief Richard Petrin said two men were rescued from the waters after the ship they were sailing began to sink. A 9-1-1 emergency call from a South Shore Beach patron alerted authorities to the emergency, he said.

The Little Compton Fire Department along with The Narragansett Bay Marine Taskforce were dispatched to the area of South Shore Beach for a catamaran that had overturned with two people in the water at around 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday. Little Compton Marine 1 was the first boat to arrive and they removed the two uninjured gentlemen from the water.

"Once we arrived we were able to get them right out," said Petrin. "The whole thing was probably a half hour."

Both men were wearing life preservers and did not require medical attention. Little Compton Fire Rescue Marine 1 brought the men safely to shore and dropped them off at the Sakonnet Point Club. This was the first recue made by the recently purchased vessel, said Petrin.
