Is America Stronger Now Than Four Years Ago?
What does Middletown think? Is life better than four years ago?
During Monday night’s presidential debate, President Obama said that America is stronger now than when he came into office.
Sound off about you views on the presiden'ts handling of our country.
On the local level, what do you think about your leadership. What has improved/been lost in the last term and what do you hope to gain in the next?
We want to know what you think. Is America is stronger now than four years ago? Tell us in the comments.

The price at the pump ,food, clothing, health care all rising as our dollar shrinks in value. The National debt has grown to over sixteen trillion dollars, and the unfunded liability to one hundred and twenty five trillion. We are further in debt and our economy is still not growing fast enough . We need to clean house and get America back on track. Obama has failed and needs to go . The $1.6 trillion dollar spending deficits his administration have had for four years are ruining and chance to fix SS. and Medicare. How do you fix these programs when the bulk of the budget goes just to pay interest on the debt. We need to send them all to debt counseling.

Hi joe I left a comment earlier but I'm not sure if it went through, I'm a registered democrat, my wife registered independent, but votes republican cuz her dad tells her to pretty much. My point here is to say that we are a prime example of being better off now than four years ago. During President Bush's administration it would have been nearly impossible for us to own a home, camper, two cars, have two children and a dog. I watched my parents struggle being immagrants from Portugal, we lived in a 2 family home which they owned but still struggled... My mother was a cancer patient for 16 years... So my father did it alone for the majority of my life... My wife on the other hand had a more successful up bringing and her father was the only worker for a while but he was a business owner... In 2009 we bought a home thanks in huge part to first time homebuyer tax credits and other programs we qualified for under the Obama administration we are not on wic or welfare... Although we struggle with the basics as everyone else does, our wages have increased a minimum 5% over the last three yrs alone. The sad thing is town property taxes and paying for trash disposal has not allowed us to really save... Which is where you come in joe... We are definitely in a lot better shape now than four yrs ago and yes I do credit the Obama administration. 1500 characters is only half of what I have to say but I think you get the picture.. Good luck next month joe. You do seem like a nice guy.

There are so many tedious misconceptions in this, and every post made above your paygrade, Joe. If you're serious about considering debt reduction, you'll need revenue - that comes from taxation.
If you're serious about filling the coffers, you'll realize that thirty years of "Trickle-down" economics has failed.
You would need the memory capacity of a goldfish to forget the dark days after
Lehman brothers went under, and the mess backstage was revealed.
The DoJ has finally charged one of the major players in the colossal fraud that

Claiming that Obama has been the root of all evil in this betrays the publication date of your history text - Jan 2009. (Believe it or not - things happened prior.)

Wow Naome lets go back to the first two years of Mr Obama being in office. Now we also have to bring in Mr Harry Reed and Ms Nancy Pelosi in on this too. Seems that Mr. Reed increased his share of the Federal pork pie for his home state by over double what he had been taking and Ms.Nancy Pelosi just had to have the Air Force go out and buy here a special jet just to ferry her butt back and forth from Foggy Bottom to the land of fruits and nuts when ever she wanted it. She was upset they didn't have one available for her 24/7. The ones they did have were being used to ferry wounded troops out of Iraq. AND it had to be stocked with all TOP SHELF booze and she didn't pay a dime for it. No it was paid for by the Air Force and that means US the tax payers. At least the speaker of the house takes commercial flights home and flies in coach just to save the tax payers money. Yup I think he saved quite a bit compared to Nancy who cost us over $75,000 each time she when back and forth. Then we get to Mr. Obama and one of the first things he does with Harry and Nancy is to get ACORN as much money as he can stuff down their throats. A nice 6 million dollars just to the Chicago office that he help with legal work and was on the board. Sure turned out to be CORRUPT. OH wait all of this must have been Bush's fault right? And the list just goes on. Mr. Obama and company have driven the debt higher and faster then anyone before them. We won't be here but our grand kids will be paying for it

Do you suffer from Fox Geezer syndrome? This reads as a litany of transgressions as told by Reverend Ailes. The trouble is, he declines to list the members of his own congregation;

Spare us the drivel, won't you. If I wanted to hear the NewsCorp party line,
I would turn on the TV. Try to be original - and focus on the question.
It might help if you backed off the direct drip from your RUSH-IV.

Naome.....fixing debt does not come from taxation in order to get more revenue.....it comes from living within your budget and not spending more then we have. It doesn't matter how much they tax us, we need to get our spending under control and unfortunately for us Obama could care less about reducing spending. This whole idea that we need to spend or print our way out of this is ridiculous.......remember, taking a credit card from the bank of china is unpatriotic......right?

Deficit spending is very different in a government setting than in a household.
The corollaries seem compelling, but the model doesn't transfer.
(You and I can't print money to account for increased productivity, for example.)

"This whole idea that we need to spend or print our way out of this is ridiculous.......remember, taking a credit card from the bank of china is unpatriotic......right?" A false dichotomy, as if there are only two correct answers.
The truth is that having the Chinese hitch their wagon to ours makes us SAFER.

The voices supporting a balanced budget amendment are already wealthy -
they're intent on dismantling social services, which has the perverse effect of driving wages down. There is scant mention of the DoD black hole where cash
goes to vanish, as if by magic.

Make no mistake, you need BOTH cuts and increased revenue.
Trickle down accrues more holdings to the wealthiest, who cannot spend enough
to raise the activity level across broader swaths of the economy.
In short, your model is both flawed and simplistic.
Try reading The Economist - they don't have a dog in the fight.

And how much did goin into Iraq under false pretenses cost us? The point isn't whether or not its Bush's or Obama fault.. It's the fact that when Clinton left office we were 5 trillion in debt it's was 3.5 trillion when he came in ... Bush left us with 10 trillion in debt that's almost 7 times what Clinton spent. Obama has increased it 6 which is a lot but he's trying to think outside the box and there is only so much you can do when the party of no isn't willing to negotiate in Washington... AGAIN ... This is both party's fault but yes some major issues were left over from bush and more were created under Obama ... But it will increase just the same under Romney and his fantasy tax plan... How long before we hear sorry middle class but the rich need more tax breaks so they can hire people so we aren't goin to raise taxes but your can foot the bill for college and planned parenthood etc... This notion that democrats are spenders and the republicans are savers is b.s. Romney will set us back 10 years ... The rich don't care if I make it or not so why should I care if they get taxed more? When they do get tax breaks it goes back into their pockets no into jobs like they claim... The richest people complain about something costing 100! While the middle class just shut up and pay for it without bitching.... Stop being so one sided and hold your party accountable as we all shod hold both sides accountable for this mess.

Really Matt....party of no!........didn't Obama own both the house and senate for the first two years of his presidency?, yes he did. Yet he got nothing accomplished. He could have passed anything he wanted.

Trickle down taxes . Tax the Rich says the Tax and Spender. So the over taxed businesses raise prices on goods and services to cover the cost. Who pays the tax .The people who consume goods and services. The true and tested answer is control spending and grow jobs. We all know our Government has grown too big and needs to be down sized.

That sounds reasonable - let's start with the subsidies that accrue to wealthy people
for instance the mortgage interest deduction, or means testing medicare.
After that we could close a few of the military bases overseas.
You did say cut spending, right Joe?

"Conservatives say if you don't give the rich more money, they will lose their incentive to invest. As for the poor, they tell us they've lost all incentive because we've given them too much money."
"Have you ever wondered why Republicans are so interested in encouraging people to volunteer in their communities? It’s because volunteers work for no pay. Republicans have been trying to get people to work for no pay for a long time."

We need not wait to see what a Romney Government looks like - it's Bushanomics.
(Or just Bush-league, neither is at all practical or serious about the debt.)
http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2012/10/bushonomics-on-steroids-romneys-tax-plan-is-still-severely-impossible/263797/
Means test entitlements, stop the tax breaks to people who already have money and bring home the troops. Nobody says that, do they?
Instead, we're crowing about Ryan's plan to dump the public assistance needs
onto churches. That cost? $50,000 PER RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION in the US.
Perhaps it's a good idea, it will bring on the American "Bastille Day" when all the landlords, loan sharks and hucksters finally get their last haircut...

He actually did get stuff done ... Just not stuff u agree with... He came into office having to tackle the auto industry which is thriving now... He had to bail out Wall Street which was a necessary evil and he passed the healthcare bill to us demon democrats that's getting stuff done , important stuff... Now the republicans are holding the middle class hostage just because they don't want to go back to the rates that Clinton had... That's not even raising taxes they are just going to expire but that isn't gonna damage the middle class as much as the wealthy right? I was trying to be objective and state that both sides are to blame but obviously Fox News or should I say GOP tv, have gotten to you... Go vote Romney but if he gets elected you'll jump at the chance to say " oh he has tol fix the prior administration's mistakes but we're not allowed to say that about bush because his presidency was so great right?... Oh wait this makes sense... Women should not be allowed to make their own decisions for their body and how dare gays think they should have the right to marry ... In the same breathe you'll bitch about how unfair it is to tax the rich more than the middle class. Talk about living within our means 90% of the middle class is struggling 90% of the wealthy got three time richer than they were 3 years ago ... Sitting on trillions of dollars ... Cuz they are " afraid " give me a break that's bs
