If you want to be notified via email of ways to provide comfort and support during this difficult time, please post in the comments section: "I want to help."

Patch will continue to update this article with ways to help—posting updates to the story as well as in the comments thread, triggering an email notification to commenters—and if you know of an organization or fundraiser providing assistance, let us know in the comments section, too.

Already the United Way of Western Connecticut, in partnership with Newtown Savings Bank, created the Sandy Hook School Support Fund to help provide support services to the families and community that are affected.

I want to send cheerful Christmas cards to the children of Sandy Hook in hopes that the spirit of the season defeats the memory of this horror as they mature. Myself with the help of some friends and many others intend on sending as many as we can. I have the address to the firehouse, but is there a better place to send them? I can be reached at girly_jarhead@yahoo.com -Leslie

If you would like to mail sympathy cards or letters of support and solidarity to the school, the school address appears to be:
Sandy Hook Elementary School
12 Dickenson Drive
Sandy Hook, CT 06482
Please copy/paste/share widely. Sending a card is something small but at least it's something we can do. We encourage families to make this a family event tonight

Sad to have to say this. However I would wait a bit before doing anything in the way of donations until verifiable systems are in place. Remember to not do anything over the phone or internet and e-mails. People use these types of things to scam people in the wake of events such as this.

I know many including myself want to do something right now. But it is early yet and the families need time obviously. We also must be careful to not flood families or institutions with mail and donations until systems are in place to handle it all. Charity comes from the heart. Again sadly there are many out there who would take this as an opportunity for nefarious means. It is the reality of the times we live in.
Condolence’s to all the families involved and bless the children all of them.

It seems to me that all the Sandy Hook school children could use new coats - they all left them in school on Friday.

If you want to help anything like this happening again, vote against semi-automatic weapons. There only used for one thing, and we know what that is.

Sorry John, The Oklahoma city bomber killed hundreds and never used a semi automatic weapon. A man in China stabbed 22 school children and never used a semi automatic weapon. If making semi automatic weapons illegal will fix this problem we should also make heroin and cocaine illegal.

Don't blame the guns that did this, the crazy boy stole them from his law abiding mother ! Semi-auto's is not the problem.. Put security force details in every school for issues like this!

John, you could not be more right. Those who oppose a ban on assault weapons are overreacting. Other than military or police personnel, there is no reason why one needs an assault rifle. They are counterproductive in hunting, for one thing. So why does anyone oppose a ban? They're paranoid that it will lead to the abrogation of the 2nd amendment - and no one is suggesting that. As for the China incident, none of those 22 school children were killed. And heroin and cocaine are already illegal!

Thank you so much for your concern for Newtown, which is my hometown. Last night on the news, there was word that the Newtown Post Office has set up a box for anyone wishing to send cards or letters. The address is P.O. Box 3700, Newtown, CT 06470. You can probably just address it to “Sandy Hook Elementary Families” and it will get there just fine.

It was a very tragic thing that happened. I know in my own mind that all i would want is to be left alone and to turn on my tv and not be reminded every second of the day. Money isnt going to bring happiness, nor will christmas cards or gifts to remind those parents that they are not spending christmas with their children anymore. I would think the best thing to do is to have and keep those people in your prayers. im not sounding like a prude, i simply put myself into their situation and ask myself what i would want.

I spent all day yesterday in Sandy Hook with my dog. I spoke to many many peopleand I couldnt come up with anything that you could buy to make things better for these people. On the drive home I was think that there might be a fund to cover the counselling but that might be covered by the state or federal government. The only thing Im sure of is that Prayers cant hurt. I will be going back this friday to see if I can help again.

Ken, i would not worry too much about the anti-gun rants..

As they talk and talk.. Gun sales are booming! More and more people are arming themselves as they wake up and realize the government and states cannot protect them 24/7 if at all..

Let them talk..

T.E.: So the spurt in gun sales post-Newtown massacre constitutes evidence of government incompetence in protecting the lives of its citizens? You gun nuts shoot yourselves in the foot -- to be charitable -- almost every time you position yourselves in a verbal firing squad of circular reasoning. The cold and clear irony that those most psychologically dependent on their guns are the most fearful and least courageous among us never ceases to amaze me. You are among the mentally unbalanced in our midst. Those possessed of a justifiably rational fear are the unfortunate souls who might happen to engage your discomfiting presence.
