U.S. Army Major Ron Tammaro of Little Compton, RI (left) poses with Major John Guerrero of Guamin at the Forward Operating Base (also known as FOB Lighting) in Gardez, Afghanistan in March, 2008. On the day this photo was taken, Tammaro and Guerrero received Combat Patches, which recognize service in a combat zone. Tammaro, who was station in Germany from 1984 to 1986 as an enlisted man, said serving overseas after Sept. 11, 2001, felt different. “It’s different in a sense that it hit home,” he said. “It was more personal.” Tammaro said that even though those attacks were a decade ago, he is grateful to be a part of something larger than him. “One of the best things about serving in the military, [is that] you don’t do things for yourself. Whether it’s a state mission, Rhode Island gets hit with a hurricane or I get called back to active duty, that’s service to others. When I am in Afghanistan, I am serving the Afghani people [while] representing the United States. I think that’s a great thing to be involved in. ”

Hey Tiverton and Little Compton, Veterans Day is today, and it is the day to honor the men and women who have served in our nation's armed forces.

Please participate in Patch, and in Veterans Day, by posting photographs or videos of veterans in your life.

Feel free to post a photo of a veteran from any era, from your great-grandfather to your neighbor's niece. We'd love to hear a little about the veteran, too, either in the photo caption or in the comment box at the bottom of this story.

It's easy to post a photo! Just click on the "Submit my photo" button (in green) and then find the photo in your computer, click Open, and there you go.

Thank you for using Tiverton-Little Compton Patch as a way to honor the veterans in your life.

If you want to REALLY support the troops then BRING THEM HOME!! Fighting unconstitutional wars in the Middle East does not make us free!
