Fort Barton School Makes Annual Visit to Tiverton War Memorial

Fort Barton School students, faculty and members of the public joined Friday in remembering those who have fallen at the World War I Memorial at Grinnell's Beach. Their annual parade made its way down Lawton Avenue for the gathering, and the rain really started to come down only at the conclusion of the gatheriing.
Students sang patrotic renditions of songs, such as 'My Country, Tis of Thee." A wreath was placed at the memorial, honoring the men and woman who have fallen while serving the country. Several students talked about the importance of Memorial Day.
Last year Principal Suzette Wordell talked about how long they've been doing the parade.

We're happy to teach our students the real meaning of Memorial Day each year in a child-centered ceremony. Please remember those that have sacrificed so much for us today on Memorial Day.

How come you didn't have police on hand to control traffic. Isn't the safety of the children important?

Tom, even with the police escort, people still did it last year. I had to do the same thing last year as I did this year. People go around the police cars and try and nudge through the kids. I am not the only one who stood in front of a car and yelled at them either year.

GREAT JOB!! My only concern was where were the police to stop traffic while the children crossed the street? Cars were driving up Lawton Street as the children were returning to Fort Barton.. I hope next year the police will be present. Can anybody tell me why they were not there?

Excellent job as usual by Principal Wordell and the staff & students at Fort Barton School. It's important to educate our students that Memorial Day is more than just a day off, and about the very real people who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Im with Donna, I stood in front of a car and yelled at the driver to wait til the kids were past. Even on the way down a car tried to drive up! I snapped a photo with my phone but couldnt make out the plate.
I love this tribute and the kids love this parade. I do wish there had been a police escort like last year though.

Great job Principle Wordell.. It was a shame to miss the parade this year because my daughter no longer attends Fort Barton.Great job also to the students!!!
