Update: Beached Humpback Whale Being Examined In Little Compton

A Patch user took photos on Thursday of a dead whale that washed ashore on Little Compton's Lloyd's Beach.

A dead humpback whale washed ashore in Little Compton on Thursday and will be examined today by officials from a local aquarium.

According to Little Compton Harbormaster Mike Massa, he was notified of the whale at 8 a.m. Thursday morning by a crew re-painting the Sakonnet Point Lighthouse who noticed it drifting by.

"I saw it just before it landed on the beach," he said over the phone on Friday.

Massa confirmed that it is a humpback whale, approximately 30 feet in length. He said officials from Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut will be arriving today to do a full examination on the whale carcass to determine the cause of death and take DNA samples.

Massa added that the bones of the whale will be removed by aquarium officials to be taken for their collection, and it will be buried on the beach.
