Tiverton police and fire were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident at the Essex Public Library at approximately 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. A Pontiac car in the library’s parking lot fell into a gully of air conditioning units located parallel with the building.

Tiverton Fire Chief Robert Lloyd said a single female occupant, stated to be in her mid-80s, was taken from the car and transported to Charlton Hospital in Fall River to be evaluated.

The car was removed from the gully a short time after 1 p.m. and the police are currently investigating how it ended up there. Police Chief Thomas Blakey said they withholding releasing the woman's name pending family notification.

Lloyd said firefighters Paul Vollaro and Aaron Almeida, who are also paramedics, were the first on scene. He said they kept the woman calm as they talked her through getting her out of the rear passenger side door. He added the paramedics had to keep the car stabalized while keeping in contact with the woman.

"This is a unique situation," Lloyd said.

Library personnel said the building was evacuated and power was shut down. Head of library adult services and references, Prudence Fallon, and assistant Amy Medeiros described hearing the crashing noise.

"I thought it was a book shelf falling," said Medeiros.

Fallon said that John Fitzgerald, head of circulation, and resident Sue Wilkie, a registered nurse who happened to be at Essex at the time of the accident, ran outside to talk to the woman.

"She was quite calm," Fallon said.

Tiverton Building Official Gareth Eames deemed the library safe, stating that two of the library's four air conditioning units were damaged, but there did not appear to be any further damage.

A specialty rescue unit was called in from Fall River, and Portsmouth, Westport and Fall River fire departments were called in for station coverage.

What a counter intuitive response. I would think more than ever one would see we do need a library. The issue of the parking lot being dangerous has actually not been included among the reasons why our town needs a better building to house broadening needs. The dangerous parking lot reinforces the issue. Tiverton citizens need a new library in a new location. Vote Yes for the new Library.

Tivertonian: perhaps a visit to the a new library could help you. You meant "THEY'RE very dangerous" (you're not indicating a location, but meaning "they are...). I vote "Yes" for the new library.

While you may want a new library, most taxpayers don't. RI town taxes are already too high and so few people actually use library's anymore, making them a thing of the past except for historical libraries. I think it's ironic that the woman described as a "resident" of Tiverton had Florida plates to avoid paying vehicle taxes on her car and probably claims residency in FL, too. It's laughable.

I and every person I know will be voting no. It is way too big and expensive. No one is talking about the costs to maintain and heat and aircondition that great big building. What will happen to the old buildings the same thing that happened with the schools? Now is not the time and the building is way too big and furthermore libraries are a thing of the past. This false talking point about meeting rooms is just so untrue. This town has plenty of buildings with room for meetings. In some cases the buildings are not even owned by the town. What if the promised funding does not come in? Guess who will be paying the bill. I am tired of this BS that libraries help business development. Well if that were true RI would be booming right now. I saw the movie with all types of spin with no talk about expenses. Buy every one in town a Kindle and get rid of hard copy books. There will be lots of space!! No now is just not the time.

How about praising the calm response of the bystanders and the professional response of the Tiverton Police and Fire Departments since this is what the story is about. I think the people who helped this woman trapped in the car did an excellent job as far as the story reads. Since the word, "Library" appeared in the article, a debate about the vote on the library, I guess, is inevitable. How about being proud of the people who responded to save this woman? I know I am!! Since it was brought up though, I will be voting for the new library, as will every person I know, (which happens to be a lot of people) because they feel that it will benefit a most of the town and it's people. We will lose our membership in the Newport County library network, which has many benefits for members of the library. If the old library is brought up to code, much like the new schools, they can be rented out, bringing in revenue for the town. Who would rent these old buildings? Well the YMCA wants to use the Nonquit school for a satellite recreational camp, and they are willing to pay for it. There will be groups who want to use the old buildings. We just have to be creative and make it happen instead of finding a way to not make things happen and say no.

the only problem with the y josh is that the town would still own the building and have to do the upkeep

I seen the library website and it is full of half truths, just like when the schools were to be built. Are you the guy asking when the schools will be sold? We were given the same dog and pony show then. What will happen to the old buildings? What if funding sources do not come through? Guess what the taxpayer will be on the hook again. Facts are that this building is way too big. We do not need the meeting rooms. There is no discussion about the increase in costs to maintain this new large building. All I have seen spin and more spin that is missing some very vital elements. It is nothing more than a sales pitch telling half of the story. I am happy to hear that the elderly lady was Ok. Jim L keep on with the spin.

I am glad no one was hurt, for the elderly and the handicapped Essex can be a very hard place to access, anyone who has parents who read should keep this in mind

RUG DOCTOR, you are beginning to sound like Dan Gordon yourself, there are no lies or distortion of any kind in the website. Why are the same names that appear again and again against improvements in this town, why are they always the nameless few?

a public library is not a school library, by law the funds canniot be co mingled, would you care to point out the waste and corruption you refer to and who preformed these acts, it would be very helpful to the openess of this process for you to expand on your inside knowledge! I and i am sure other Patch readers await your reply and the facts you will bringing out.

still waiting to hear about the corruption, the site for the library was chosen because of access to the whole town, didn't cost the town one penny, town still has the school land, didn't lose a thing. oyu call them like you want them to be, not as they are. IF you go to the library at all would you like to fight the traffic when school gets out? After a basketball game?Saying we don't need a new library is akin to saying we don't need a grocery store, we went this long withouy so why get one now?

Why did we add to the town hall? how come we built fire stations around town? built new schools? a new police station? because they were all to small for the needs of this town,You want to keep this a small town with just Dunkin Donuts for jobs? Then vote down the Library, thats what an election is for, but stop the lies and mistruths, put up your facts instead on vague comments backed by no FACTS, cowardly acts at the best

And if you read the facts the cost running this library will be less, as for the people i align myself with, i find them to be honest folk, and you can't get a library card with a fake name so a few of you are gonna miss out

Jim L is the library going to bring all of this new business to Tiverton. NO!!! The City of Warwick, Town of East Greenwich all have these types of facilities. Where is all the new business? This town can not afford this large building at this time!!! Where are the facts that we need all these meeting rooms? The Assisted Living, Coutry View estates, all types of town owned buildings are available.

It's good to see I am not alone in believing this plan for the new library is way over the top and not affordable. How many people know the state is telling us to add a million and a half dollars to the pension payment next year all while school funding is cut again.

Tiverton Dad is Kool Aid drinking and has bought the 1 sided slick sales pitch. It is what we are not being told that concerns me. Caroline you have what is going on pegged. You are s right. Why at this time with all that is going on are they shoving this upon us? If this gold plated do gooder want this big building I say let them pay for it themselves. We all know that all they want to do is spend other peoples money.

Public libraries fulfilled a useful purpose in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries but the age of books printed on paper and bound in cardboard is coming to an end. Within the next few years books will largely be delivered by electronic methods. If there continues to be a need for a public lending service this will also be provided electronically. In the second decade of the 21st century it is a total waste of money to erect a new building to house tons of paper and cardboard.

Ebook lending libraries are coming. http://www.almostzara.com/2010/02/ebook-lending-libraries-the-future-of-fiction/

It's early days yet but it's only a matter time before ebooks will be the norm and the old paper and cardboard depositories will fade away. Instead of building a vast white elephant to store dead trees why doesn't Tiverton work out how to be a leader and a role model for a public library based on the e-lending model? Maybe we could even get a grant from some technology entrepreneur interested in this concept?

Amazon is already deleating some books from customers' Kindles they can't do that with a "paper and cardboard" book. I don't want Amazon deciding what I read.

I made a comment about the unfortunate accident and my inbox is full of crap from a disgruntled library aide? Find a new job, card catalogs are a thing of the past and libraries should be, too. Life goes on, go find yourself.

Derek & Robert, thanks for the pros/cons of e-books...looks like intellectual property attorneys will be not be collecting unemployment, given the issues involved, as Robert cited in his reference to Amazon's (unauthorized, or authorized?) deletion of Orwell's 1984 from e-tablets. Interesting.

Jeff Chang:
"And that is the way the world changes—the world changes through the culture first. Cultural change always precedes political change..we are the ones who make it move—those of us who are artists, community builders, those who support artists and community builders. We change the culture, and politics follows. The folks who are against us, who are against a vibrant vital public core, know this.

The budget cuts inflicted we face here and all around the country are about laying waste to the public space and fencing it off. And they are about stopping cultural change right where it begins. We are now in an era where they are pushing privatization towards its last frontier: the collective imagination. And we cannot allow that. We have to stop them right here in their tracks...

When I go into a library, I don’t have to worry about why this book didn’t sell enough to continue to be available in any marketplace, how many other stories there are out there I am missing...In the library, I am in a space beyond the marketplace, beyond consumption, beyond the money censors..The library is the embodiment and the refuge of our collective imagination. In the library, we learn just how big and full of possibility the world is and we build the kindling to fuel our creative fires and to change our culture. Those two transformative acts are too important just to leave to the playgrounds and the graveyards of the marketplace."
