As Newtown Buries The Dead, Is it Too Soon to Discuss Gun Control?
President Obama will announce his thoughts on gun policy Wednesday
As Newtown buries the victims this week, the conversation for gun control is already in full swing. President Barack Obama will announce his thoughts on gun policy Wednesday, according to CNN.
Some say it is too soon to engage in these political discussions.
"With a doubt it is too early," said Montalvo on the Middletown Patch Facebook page. "I am tired of people making this a political issue! For goodness sake let the families grieve."
Others remained fierce in their belief that stricter gun control regulations would have prevented such a killing, saying the victims were shot multiple times and with semi-automatic weapons, according to Fox News.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) of America made their first statement on Tuesday about the shooting, citing respect for the victims as the reason for their silence.
"Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting," the NRA provided in a statement. They will conduct a press conference on Friday.
The guns were owned by the shooter's mother and were legally purchased. Among them were a semi-automatic .223 caliber bushmaster rifle and two handguns. Those who knew Nancy Lanza said guns were a hobby.
Should advocates let the town bury their dead before they discuss issues such as gun control? Do you think stricter gun control laws could had prevented the tragedy?
Tell us what you think in the comments:

The lack forethought to banning guns as the answer is quite sad really. Apparently nobody has learned anything from history? Let me help:
In 1911 Turkey established gun control.1.5 million Armenians were rounded up and killed.
In 1929 the Soviet Union established gun control and 20 million dissidents were arrested and executed
In 1938 Germany established gun control.13 million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, mentally ill, union leaders, Catholics and others, unable to fire a shot in protest, were killed by the state.
In 1935 China established gun control. Between 1948 and 1952, over 20 million dissidents were rounded up and murdered by the Communists.
In 1956 Cambodia enshrined gun control. In just two years (1975-1977) over one million "educated" people (about 1/3 of the entire population!) were executed by the Reds.
In 1964 Guatemala locked in gun control. From 1964 to 1981 over 100,000 Mayan Indians were rounded up and killed, unable to defend themselves.
In 1970 the Ugandan dictator decreed gun control. During the next nine years over 300,000 Christians were murdered.
Over 56 million people have died, unable to defend themselves, because of gun control in the last century alone.
So much for keeping our guns if we register them. On the other hand, lenient gun laws mean less crime. In Switzerland, all males from the ages of 20 to 42 are required to have guns. The Swiss have almost no murders and a very low crime rate!

Now - curious enough. Anyone who thinks that banning guns is going to stop or prevent these events from taking place has got their head up somewhere or has been watching too much MSM news. Do fact checking online and LEARN what happens with violent crime rates in these countries that have done this. I mean hell if you all want to become the next USSR which it already is becoming you better wake up.
Onto the bigger issue:
Those here that think the president actually cares about this tragedy, besides trying to politicize it to his own means is just a plain zombie. Please help another human understand how a man who lacks compassion when it comes to say, taking out a wedding of 200 people woman and kids with a drone in Pakistan or the fact that we're still invading - 6 countries ( Iraq, Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen) now killing too many innocents to count. Yet people lap it up when the guy goes on TV and fake cries to push his agenda on gun control. The ONLY reason anyone of these "power leaders" want to ban guns is to more of their own "power".
- It's funny nobody here is asking why DHS has purchased 1.6 Billion rounds of ammunition, all Hollow Point might I add. That is NOT range ammo. Why would a bureaucracy need this much in .40 cal .223 and .308.
- Why did this administration push "Fast and the Furious" in an attempt to undermine the 2nd amendment before any of these events took place by supplying the Cartel with illegal guns

Dan-Please answer one question for the readers, and for the familes and friends of the 26 slaughtered women and children of Newtown: What purpose is served by civilians owning and using military style assault weapons such as the Bushmaster .223? These weapons have one purpose and one purpose only-to kill and maim the most amount of humans in the quickest and most efficient way possible.
You can drone on and on about your gun control arguments from other countries, but the fact remains, had it been illegal for Adam Lanza's mother to purchase an assault rifle such as the Bushmaster .223 last Friday, 26 innocent women and children would be home celebrating Christmas next week., instead of spending their Christmas in coffins.

Assault rifle is a style of rifle. It is no more dangerous than any other rifle or hand gun, 223 is a caliber of a round.. You can buy this caliber in anything from a hand gun to a semi automatic rifle. I know from your past posts that you are in favor of banning anything more dangerous than a butter knife, but how many more lives will be lost before you see that it is the intent of the people that use the weapon that needs to be addressed.. Also seeing you have been chosen to speak for the families of those that were killed in Sandy Hook.( you could atleast get the town right ) could you tell us the name of the family or friend that asked you to speak for them. You make it sound as though you are their spokesman yet I doubt you have talked to anyone that is even remotely involved. You are insulting them by pretending that you know how they feel or what they are thinking. Is it your hatered of guns or the loss of life that they cause that motivates you?

Taking away guns is your deal. Now you end your post with "STFU" Im guessing that freedom of speach is your next target. By the way I have talked to people in Sandy Hook and the vast majority thought that mental health was the cause and the gun was what he used to accomplish his goal. Why dont you get it? Treat the problem not the tool that the problem uses. Dont let your hatred of guns stop you from seeing the root of the problem. Your energy and drive could be much better spent pushing for better health care.

The ones with guns present a clear and present danger.

"At 8:04 p.m. on Thursday an unnamed man was standing on the northbound platform at 40th Street and Queens Boulevard, waiting for the No. 7 train. Witnesses told police that a woman had been walking back and forth on the platform and talking to herself before she took a seat on a wooden bench on the platform.
As the No. 7 train approached the station, witnesses said the woman rose from the bench and pushed the man, who'd been standing with his back to her, onto the tracks.
Witnesses told police that the victim did not seem to notice the woman behind him. He was struck by the first of the 11-car train. His body was pinned under the front of the second car as the train came to a stop, according to a statement from Deputy Commissioner Paul Brown."

Gladly will I answer your question. First, you stop trying to involve these families in this discussion and its about gun control, its not about Newtown but if you want to go into that I will in the next paragraph. The purpose of ANY weapon is to cause harm or even kill someone, that's why they are called weapons. Now, even IF she couldn't obtain a .223 legally and say all guns were outlawed in this country and this kid still wanted to do what he wanted to do. There are many options besides just guns. To say its JUST the GUN because GUNS kill, well so do swords, knives, stun guns, cars and alcohol. I disagree with your efficient way as well since he could have done way more damage in many other ways that I'd rather not discuss on a forum.
I don't see anyone on here bitching about the stun guns police are using now that are giving the receiving end heart attacks, brain damage, and heart failure? Go research how many people died from stun guns this year from police tazing.
Second, It has been widely reported that he was found in the school with two pistols by his body, and the bushmaster AR was in his trunk. So ask yourself why and how the hell did 223 casings get on the ground when he was found with 2 pistols in his hands and the AR in the trunk of the car in the parking lot? Did he go back to his vehicle and then decide to put the gun back? Why would a suicidal gun man wear a mask and body armor if he was going to kill himself......? Makes alot of sense eh?

You really need to catch up on the news Dan-National polls show 87% of the population is in favor of stricter gun control measures in this country, and those measures are coming and they're coming soon. Fortunately, there's nothing you, LaPierre, and your few fellow gun nuts can do to stop it.

But the fact that you are believing everything from the media shows how bright your sun shines. You should google: "Sheeple".

The point of the last comment was the fact that he was found with two pistols by his body yet there were .223 casings on the ground. Who fired the AR if all he had were pistols on his body and killed himself in the school? It leaves the question how did the AR rounds get on the ground if the weapon was in the TRUNK of his car.
its called "CRITICAL THINKING" skills as in the story being told doesn't make complete sense.

Dan as much as I would like to agree with you, the gun that I saw pictures and vidoeo of being taken from the trunk of his moms car was a semi auto shotgun. To me what he used as a weapon doesnt matter. The fact is that he was a mentally unstable person that had intentions of killing kids to get his name and actions in the media for all to see.In my opinion the mental issues outweigh what he used for a weapon. If his mental issues were addressed before this happened we wouldnt be talking about him or what weapon he used.
As for the only purpose of guns is to harm or kill humans? If that is fact I need to get rid of my guns as soon as possible. I have owned guns for close to 40 years. I have fired thousands of rounds through them and NEVER even came close to hitting a human never mind hurting or killing one. Either I am the worlds worst shot or I found another use for them.

For your information Dan, gangs and cartels don't burst into elementary schools and slaughter 26 innocent women and children. You gun nuts have had your fun playing Soldier of Fortune, but times change, society changes, and our culture changes. Sharing the shock of his people, the newly elected Prime Minister, John Howard — just two months into his eleven-and-a-half years in power — seized the chance to overhaul Australia's gun laws, trampling all opposition to make them among the strictest in the developed world. "I hate guns," he said at the time. "One of the things I don't admire about America is their slavish love of guns ... We do not want the American disease imported into Australia." Howard argued the tougher laws would make Australia safer. But 12 years on, new research suggests the government response to Port Arthur was a waste of public money and has made no difference to the country's gun-related death rates.
Though he'd acquired them illegally, Bryant used guns at Port Arthur that were lawful in Tasmania at the time. Howard argued there was no reason civilians should be allowed to own assault weapons — and under the 1996 National Firearms Agreement (NFA) these were all but banned. At huge cost, the government bought from their owners some 650,000 of the newly prohibited guns, which police destroyed. It also implemented mandatory gun licenses and registration of all firearms, helping to restrict to 5% of the population the number of Australian adults who owned or used guns last year, down from 7% in 1996.

Joe said, "Drug smugglers bring them in from over seas."
While I'm sure some guns come from overseas smuggling, that's a small handful compared to the guns produced in this country that end up in the hands of criminals and the deranged. Here are just a few ways this happens.
Guns are transported from states with lax gun laws to states with stricter gun laws. States with lax gun laws often do not require background checks and do not limit purchases to a maximum number.
Straw purchases. This is when a person who is legally allowed to purchase a gun pays for it and sells it to someone who would not pass a background check or is too young to buy one one their own. One of the guns used at Columbine was a straw purchase from a gun show.
Speaking of gun shows. Gun shows often are not required to do background checks and sometimes do not even ask for ID. This is the so called gun show loophole. The Virginia Tech killer purchased his weapons from a gun show. The brother of one of the victims, a gun control activist, visited a gun show in Virginia and purchased 10 weapons without a background check and in some cases with no ID. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baPgr_tw79Q
Stolen guns: The items that thieves most often look for when they break into homes are cash and guns. Make sure your legally-owned guns are in an approved vault. The standard should be that it will take one-hour for an average thief to break into your gun safe.

There is something seriously wrong with the gun laws in this country when it's more difficult to buy a pack of cigarettes or bottle of whiskey than it is to buy a high powered military style assault rifle.
